Mankey, Jason. Transformative Witchcraft: The Greater Mysteries. Woodbury, MN: Llewellyn Publications, 2019.
The publisher's marketing doesn't do this text justice. I would call this an excellent introduction into the world of witchcraft. It explains from where modern witchcraft came, how it evolved, and why we do what we do in the way we do it. Mankey has a very personal writing style that informs the reader through personal experiences and insights. And, Mankey has a developed historical understanding that is grounded in fact yet takes us to our best conclusions, whether it be the origins of Wicca, the Golden Dawn, Gardner, Leland, or any other figure of the modern era of witchcraft. Mankey gives special and in-depth focus, analysis, and examples for magic circles, dedications, initiations, drawing down the moon, and the Great Rite -- those rituals that might be called "The Greater Mysteries" of the subtitle. The book is quite different from most other entry-level witchcraft texts as it is much more grounded in the people who made it what it is.
Jason Mankey is a third-degree High Priest and prolific Witchcraft author (ten books and counting). Mankey focuses on researching the Horned God, Witchcraft, history of magic & witchcraft, and the occult influences in rock and roll music. He regularly lectures and leads rituals at Pagan and Witchcraft events in both North America and the United Kingdom.
