Budai, the semi-historical Chinese monk venerated in both Chinese and Japanese Buddhism is commonly referred to as the "Laughing Buddha" due to his jovial demeanor. He is also a part of the Japanese 7 Lucky Gods, and is their God of fortune, protector of the children, patron of diviners, and the God of popularity. He is easily identified by the sack he carries around, signifying his happy and unique nature.
