Egyptian Cat / Bastet Tapestry

The ancient Egyptians were respectful towards the animals that shared their world and associated many of them with deities or positive human characteristics. However, no animal was held in such esteem as the cat. They were considered to be demigods and their own right. The most famous cat deity was Bast; she became the goddess representing protection, fertility and motherhood. Along with Sekhmet she was known as the eye of Ra.
