Whispers from Eternity is a devotional prayer-book and meditation aid.  Rather than being a doctrinal or philosophical treatise, Whispers is meant to be used—read slowly, inwardly, and meditatively.  The core purpose of the book is to direct personal communion with God.  Its central aim is to help the reader develop an intimate inner relationship with the Divine, experienced as a living presence rather than an abstract belief.  Yogananda frames prayer not as petition alone, but as conscious conversation with God, where the soul both speaks and learns to listen.

The book consists of short poetic prayers and affirmations, written in first-person address to God, often invoking Divine love, Guidance, Inner peace, Strength in suffering, and the longing of the soul for union with the Infinite.  Yogananda frequently uses Christian language (Father, Beloved, Shepherd) alongside Hindu concepts, making the book accessible to Western readers.

Yogananda is famous for introducing self-realization to the west, especially the United States, when he arrived as a delegate to the International Congress of Religious Liberals in 1920.  Staying in the U.S., he founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles.  His Autobiography of a Yogi introduced Vedantic theology and the practice of Kriya yoga to America.
