This journal holds a fascinating recreation of the binding of The Universe: Or, the Infinitely Great and the Infinitely Little by French naturalist Felix-Archimede Pouchet (1800-1872). Published in London in 1870 and designed by John Leighton, its cover medallions include words and images symbolizing ''Air Water Fire,'' ''Vegetable Animal Mineral,'' and in the center – ''The Universe,'' with spheres indicating latitude and longitude and zodiac symbols.
Its cover is embossed and embellished with gold foil, and the spine sports a matching treatment. Every page is adorned with light-catching gilded-gold edging.
