A Jizo Monk (or Jizo Bosatsu) is a beloved Buddhist bodhisattva in Japan, depicted as a humble, shaved-head monk who vows to protect all beings, particularly children, travelers, and souls in hell. Often carved out of stone, as among Japanese culture, stone is believed to have a spiritual power for protection and longevity that predates Buddhist beliefs. Jizo Monk Statues are often dressed in red bibs and hats because the Japanese believed that the colour red can help ward off evil and sickness. Sometimes large stone statues will be placed along roadsides and in temples, and become comforting, accessible guardians. Having a Jizo statue in your home or on your altar symbolizes compassion, offering protection for deceased, unborn, or young children, and acting as a guide for lost souls.
